I first learned about podcasting the same way the other pioneers in the space did. In late August and early September 2004, the buzz started building about a new way to subscribe to audio and video and I went to investigate. I've been teaching people how to distribute audio and video online for over five years. It's not often something as revolutionary as podcasting comes along to change the way people do business.
In the online audio world before podcasting, you posted a MP3 file online, linked to the MP3 and hoped people would come to your site and download your MP3. If you were really savvy, you might have an email newsletter that notified subscribers when a new MP3 was posted to keep people in the loop. Podcasting changes MP3 distribution by getting people to subscribe to your podcast. Your listeners don't need to remember to check your site for a new MP3 because the MP3 is already waiting for them on their MP3 player.
At the time podcasting emerged, I was in the middle of re-launching The Chris Pirillo Show, a radio show that previously aired on traditional AM stations, as an Internet-only live show. By putting the show on the Internet, we broke down the listening barriers and opened up the live calls to people around the world instead of limiting callers to the local listening area. We were already planning to offer downloads of the show in addition to the live stream, so podcasting became the perfect extension of the show.
Applying what Chris and I already know about distributing text content via RSS made podcasting a natural. Chris Pirillo is one of the leading experts on syndicated publishing and I'm one of the leading advocates of online audio and video publishing. Together that makes for one successful collaboration in podcasting.
